ELA Elementary Programme Overview

A warm and academically strong English Language Arts journey rooted in the British Columbia curriculum and designed to help every child grow in confidence, voice, and purpose.

Welcome to the Elementary School division at the Canadian School Bahrain (CSB). Our programme is dedicated to fostering a nurturing, inclusive, and dynamic learning environment where young learners thrive. Grounded in the rigorous and world-renowned British Columbia (BC) curriculum, our educational philosophy focuses on developing the whole child intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically.

We empower students to become critical thinkers, collaborative problem-solvers, and empathetic global citizens who are deeply connected to their own cultures while remaining open to the world. What makes the Elementary division truly special at CSB is our seamless integration of international standards with local cultural values.

We do not simply teach subjects; we cultivate a love for discovery through inquiry-based learning, storytelling, and creative expression. By balancing robust academics with character development, we ensure that every child’s unique voice is heard, valued, and celebrated.

Building strong readers, writers, speakers, and thinkers

English Language Arts in the Elementary School supports students as they explore stories, develop literacy confidence, and learn to communicate with clarity and creativity. Each stage is carefully designed to strengthen foundational skills while encouraging curiosity, reflection, and meaningful self-expression.

Belonging Students learn in a supportive environment where their ideas, identities, and voices matter.
Growth Learning experiences are structured to build confidence step by step across each grade level.
Purpose Students use language as a tool for thinking, creating, collaborating, and connecting with others.

English Language Arts across Grades 1 to 4

Aligned with the British Columbia curriculum, ELA develops foundational and increasingly advanced literacy skills across three key terms each academic year, with continuous integration of phonics, vocabulary growth, and language mechanics.

Subject Name Grade Levels Brief Description
English Language Arts (ELA) Grades 1 – 4
  • Grade 1: Focuses on Discovering Stories, Becoming Readers and Writers, and Sharing Our Voices. Students develop listening, oral retelling, decoding strategies, letter formation, and basic sentence structure.
  • Grade 2: Centers on Exploring Feelings Through Stories, Building Reading Skills, and Learning Through Stories. Students explore story structure, non-fiction research, paragraph expansion, and letter writing.
  • Grade 3: Explores Our Stories, Our Voices, Exploring Perspectives, and Exploring New Worlds. Students work with chapter books, narrative points of view, and persuasive or informational writing.
  • Grade 4: Deepens text analysis through novel studies, character trait investigation, multi-paragraph non-fiction writing, and persuasive techniques tailored to audience and purpose.
  • Across all grades: Continuous phonics, vocabulary expansion, and language mechanics are embedded throughout the year through developmentally appropriate language study.

Active, joyful, and purposeful learning

At CSB, learning is an active journey driven by curiosity. Our elementary educators use clear, research-informed approaches that help students understand deeply, apply learning meaningfully, and grow as confident contributors within their classroom community.

01

Inquiry-Based Learning

Rather than memorizing isolated facts, students investigate big questions. In Grade 2 non-fiction research units, for example, learners move from asking thoughtful questions about the world to gathering facts and reasoning through their discoveries.

02

Project-Based Learning

Students apply concepts to real-world contexts. In Grade 4, learners engage in writing-for-an-audience projects in which they create persuasive posters, letters, and blogs intended for authentic communication and impact.

03

Collaboration

Working together is part of daily learning. From shared writing in Grade 1 to collaborative peer revision in Grade 3, students learn to communicate clearly, listen respectfully, and contribute productively as a team.

Celebrating growth, creativity, and community

Our Elementary calendar includes meaningful milestones that honor student progress and strengthen the partnership between school and home. These shared experiences help students see themselves as authors, performers, researchers, and storytellers.

The Publishing Gala

Across the primary grades, students progress from drawing journals to drafting original short stories. At the end of the unit, classes compile their strongest pieces into class books and anthologies, then celebrate their work with families in a special reading event.

Culture & Folktales Exhibition

Students explore stories and perspectives from different communities while celebrating both international and local roots. The culminating experience may include persuasive posters, storytelling showcases, and comparative displays of folklore.

Creative Expression Showcase

This celebration highlights student performance, poetry recitation, and oral storytelling. Students share nursery rhymes, poems, and original multi-paragraph narratives with a live audience in a setting that builds confidence and pride.

Assessment Policy

Clear and consistent expectations for student success

To support student achievement and maintain high educational standards, all elementary assessments, including quizzes, midterms, and finals, follow a standardized Test Content Breakdown Policy. This ensures clarity, consistency, and a balanced approach to measuring student learning over time.

Part of a wider CSB learning journey

Our Elementary English Language Arts programme helps students grow as thoughtful readers, capable writers, confident speakers, and compassionate learners. It is one meaningful part of the wider CSB journey, where academic excellence, character development, and family partnership come together to support every child’s future.
