The British Columbia Canada curriculum (BC Curriculum) is an internationally renowned education program of the highest standard.

The BC Curriculum teaches students through fostering a lifelong love of learning. This program offers a balanced, concept and inquiry-based approach that is student-centered.

The core competencies of Communication, Critical and Creative Thinking, and Personal and Social Responsibility are integrated into all learning.

All subject include Math, Science, Language Arts, Social Studies, Applied Skills, Career Education, Arabic Language, Citizenship and Islamic Studies.

The BC
Curriculum Overview

The British Columbia (BC) Curriculum is built on a modern model designed for the 21st century. It explicitly shifts away from older "memorize and test" methods, focusing instead on preparing students for a rapidly changing, technology-driven world.

The entire framework is summarized by a simple, three-part philosophy: "Know-Do-Understand.”

The Content -> The Skills/Actions -> The Big Concepts

  • Content (Know): The essential facts, information, and foundational knowledge of a subject.
  • Curricular Competencies (Do): The specific skills, strategies, and processes students practice to apply that knowledge.
  • Big Ideas (Understand): The broad, deep concepts that students will remember and carry with them long after the school year ends.

Key Benefits of the BC Curriculum

  • Promotes Deeper Learning over Memorization

Instead of just memorizing facts to pass a test and then forgetting them, students focus on "Big Ideas."This allows them to connect learning across different subjects and apply what they know to real-world situations.

  • Highly Personalized and Flexible

The curriculum gives teachers and students the flexibility to explore topics based on local contexts, real-world events, and the students' own passions. It treats students as individual learners with unique needs.

  • Focuses on "Core Competencies" (Life Skills)

Embedded in every single subject are three major skill sets that universities and employers highly value:

  • Communication: Shifting ideas, collaborating, and digital literacy.

  • Thinking: Creative problem-solving and critical analysis.

  • Personal & Social Responsibility: Emotional well-being, social responsibility, and cultural identity.

  • Strong Foundations in Literacy and Numeracy

Reading, writing, and mathematical problem-solving are not just taught in isolation; they are reinforced across all subjects (e.g., applying math skills in Science or ADST).

  • Globally Recognized and Respected

Because it focuses on higher-order thinking and self-motivation, graduates of the BC Curriculum are highly sought after by top-tier universities and colleges worldwide.

Personal Education Number (PEN)

Students registered will receive a Personal Education Number (PEN) which is a nine-digit number assigned to each student enrolled or registered with any BC Certified School.

Once issued, the PEN follows the student through their B.C. education path from Early Learning, to Grade 12.

This number is used for multiple purposes including:

  • Transition between BC schools
  • Post-secondary education
  • Final transcripts
  • Student reporting
More about PEN
Graduates from the program receive a B.C. Certificate of Graduation called the Dogwood Diploma.
Diploma is internationally

This Diploma is internationally recognized by the world’s leading universities for entrance to tertiary studies. It is equivalent to a secondary school graduation certificate in Bahrain.

Academic results for B.C. students are outstanding as assessed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and Program for International Student Assessment for educational systems (PISA).

The BC Curriculum and how it differs from a traditional learning curriculum

The comprehensive curriculum provides an excellent foundation for all areas of learning.

CSB is focused on developing strong literacy and numeracy skills. Sound foundations of literacy and numeracy are skills that are the foundation of BC’s education system and are a key component of developing an educated citizen.

The most important goal of our program is to encourage our students to become self-confident inquisitive and enthusiastic learners.

The BC Curriculum allows children to learn through multiple pathways that help them to make personal connections to their learning. Teachers provide an environment in the classroom in which students are engaged and invested in their learning and ultimately advocate for their own learning.

Description of Individual Subjects

1. Mathematics

The BC Math curriculum focuses on developing flexible, creative, and critical mathematical thinkers. Rather than relying solely on memorizing formulas, the curriculum is built around numeracy.

The ability to apply mathematical understanding to real-world contexts. Students explore patterns, data, space, and numbers through a "hands-on" approach that emphasizes problem-solving, logical reasoning, and analyzing financial literacy.

2. Science

The Science curriculum uses an inquiry-based and place-based approach, encouraging students to ask questions and investigate the world around them. It covers four major domains: Life Science (Biology), Physical Science (Chemistry/Physics), Earth and Space Science, and environmental sustainability. A key element is integrating Indigenous perspectives and understanding how scientific knowledge impacts society and ecosystems.

3. Language Arts (English Language Arts)

Language Arts centers on the power of language to communicate, collaborate, and discover meaning. The curriculum is designed to build strong literacy skills through six language arts language modes: listening, speaking, reading, writing, viewing, and representing. Students learn to critically analyze diverse texts (including digital media and literature) to understand different perspectives and express their own identities.

4. ADST (Applied Design, Skills, and Technologies)

ADST is an experiential, hands-on subject that brings together various practical disciplines—such as coding, robotics, woodworking, culinary arts, textile design, and business education. The core of ADST is teaching students the design thinking process:

  • Understanding a user's need.
  • Ideating and brainstorming solutions.
  • Prototyping and making a product.
  • Testing and sharing their creations.

5. Islamic Studies

While Islamic Studies is not a standard, public BC Ministry of Education curriculum subject, it is a core academic course taught in BC Certified Islamic Independent Schools. These independent schools design their Islamic Studies curriculum themselves locally to align with the BC Ministry’s "Core Competencies" framework.

  • It typically covers Islamic history, and locally taught courses in that region for instance Citizenship & Arabic Social Studies
  • It is taught using the same modern pedagogical methods as other BC subjects—focusing on critical thinking, personal identity, social responsibility, and understanding how to practice faith within a diverse global community.

The Arabic
Program

CSB is committed to ensuring our students have every opportunity to succeed in their Arabic Language, Citizenship and Islamic studies.

The arabic Program

Arabic language and local Citizenship are required courses for all students. Islamic studies are optional for non-Bahraini students.

We follow the Bahrain Ministry of Education curriculum for these subjects however as part of a fully integrated program, the competencies of the BC curriculum are included in the Arabic program.

The school offers the required number of hours and in many instances goes beyond the requirements to ensure that our students can become excellent in their Arabic studies.

The Arabic program includes many service opportunities which are also integrated into the BC program. Students also participate in local language and Quran competitions.

Arabic teachers collaborate with the BC teachers in integrating the curriculum whenever possible. It is another example of CSB's focus on taking a holistic approach to students and their learning.
